I was born in 1991 so I can only judge them in a limited manner and retrospectively, but the best hair metal albums in my opinion are Out of the Cellar by Ratt and Faster Pussycat's first album. I'm not really knowledgeable about 80s hair bands, but it seems like the bands who had more interesting, marketable names went further although they might've had less talent or songwriting capability. Motley Crue comes to mind. They seem quite subpar talent-wise, but they have one of the greatest band names in rock history. Dokken is a horrible band name, even though it seems they were good songwriters and their guitarist is considered one of the great players of that era.
